Northern Portrait no lo niegan

Les preguntan en pennyblackmusic.co.uk

PB : I can hear the Smiths, 1000 Violins, Aztec Camera and Orange Juice in your sound. Are you fans of any of these ?

SL : Well, I cannot deny having listened to the Smiths, and why should I? But my only knowledge of Aztec Camera comes from Craig Gannon, whom I met at a concert in Copenhagen a couple of years ago – he said they weren’t that great, and I really haven’t checked them out. But I promise I will. I must admit I have never heard of 1000 Violins, but their name obviously forces me to want to find out more about them. I’m a fan of Edwyn Collins –’A Girl Like You’ is a favourite of mine. As for Orange Juice, I’m aware of them, and I like what I’ve heard, but I wouldn’t list them as one of our biggest influences. To be absolutely honest I just pick up ideas here and there and put them together, but my list of influences includes Jarvis Cocker and Pulp which is perhaps not that audible, the Housemartins and the Smiths. But ever since we issued our first song ’Crazy’ on MySpace, all sorts of references have been made from other people, and now I’ve suddenly discovered the Sundays, the Trashcan Sinatras and others. And I’ve also become a fan of all the other Matinée Recording artists, all of whom are very inspiring.

Bobby Gillespie: "I want to write a great love song"

VARIOUS: "On Vine Street: The Early Songs of Randy Newman" / THE LINES "Memory Span"

Bookshop Casanova, our US summer single for 2007, looks set to get a summer 2008 release for the UK and Europe. It will be digital only I’m afraid but you can download exclusive track Girl From Somewhere and our cover of Television’s "The Fire" as part of the package. There is also a nice graphic of an Owl sculpture from New Mexico as the cover, which is currently behind glass in the spooky Victorian-style Pitt-Rivers Museum in Oxford.

"suffering jukebox such a sad machineyour filled up with what other people needand they never seem to turn you up loudthere are a lot of chatterboxes in this crowd"

All year she would come home from her office job and practice playing for hours," he says. "She would put a Scott Walker or Prefab Sprout LP on and play along.")

Pet Shop Boys versionean a Madness

http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/6/3/1942444/Pet%20Shop%20Boys%20-%20My%20Girl.mp3

Elephant Noise – "This song is our friend"

The Sound of Leamington Spa.

The Clientele en plan disco

As one member of the Clientele Forum puts it, ‘kind of Sister Sledge meets Orange Juice round at Jimmy Page’s house’.

New EP and Spanish Tour

There is an all-new Clientele E.P. coming up, the first recordings we’ve made since God Save the Clientele. It will be released by Acuarela Records of Madrid (the third E.P. we’ve done with them and the last part of a trilogy). We’ve always used our Acuarela E.P.s to stretch out a little bit between albums and create a kind of a through-the-looking glass version of the Clientele, and this will be no exception, but this time with the catchiest songs we’ve ever recorded. The title of the E.P. is "That night a Forest Grew". See shows section for a supporting Spanish tour, including a visit to Primavera Sound.

Arthur and Martha - "Autovia"

Arthur and Martha are Adam Cresswell and Alice Hubley. The former was in Saloon whilst the latter was in The Duloks. Using their moogs, casios and drum machine they prove that the links between indie and electro pop are not as far apart as they may seem on first glance on this, their debut single release.

Autovia sounds like Kraftwerk listening to the Rough Trade indie pop compilation whilst speeding down the motorway. It's pulasting driving stuff suiting it's auto-mobile inspired named. Flip side Japanese Kiss is poppier and is similar Pet Shop Boys finest moments. Cresswell's vocals are very Neil Tennant like meaning such comparisons are inevitable. It just shouts POP at you!

The download version of the single includes two extra tracks including the superb Squarewave To Heaven which is moog paradise and would no doubt would get the thumbs up from Delia Derbyshire at the pearly gates discotheque. The other track Autovia 2 is a more robotic, darker version of the original which still has it's merits.

Recommended for both analogue and digital heads.

Both versions of the single will be out on April 7th on Happy Robots. Tracks from the release can be streamed at the bands My Space page.
