A Complete Introduction to Northern Soul - BOX SET 2008

The title of this new boxset from Universal just about sums it up - A Complete Introduction to Northern Soul.

Compiled by Wigan Casino DJ Russ Winstanley, it's a four-disc set, each with its own theme - Motown Memories, Motown's Hidden Nuggets, Northern Floorshakers and Northern Anthems. For the serious collector, there's probably little new - although some tracks have made it out of the Motown archives for the first time. But for the less obsessive, it promises a mix of dancefloor staples and rare gems from the 60s to the present day - yes, even Frank Popp makes an appearance.

Momus - "Joemus"

The new Momus album, Joemus, is a collaboration between the veteran electronic vaudevillian and Joe Howe, a young Glasgow breakcore musician known for his work with Gay Against You and Germlin. Asked, back in 2007, to do a cover version for a limited edition box set called Recovery, Momus called on the young Scot's services to make a cover of David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes, which turned out "not so much a pop song as a ping pong match between Coco the Clown and Major Tom... a series of satistfying thwack and plock and boiiiiiing noises," according to Momus. The Bowie cover isn't on Joemus, but the Nintendo Glam Rock feel -- and the odd noises -- persist. The pair worked over the internet, then spent several weeks together in Berlin fine-tuning the results. The Joemus album sounds like the hits of 70s Scottish glam rock sensations The Bay City Rollers played on 80s amusement arcade equipment. Joe's frenetic, ADD-addled jams get turned by Momus into folk jigs, but the fast numbers alternate with tenderly morose slowies, covers of Cliff Richard ballads and Ryuichi Sakamoto croons. Then it's back to the beats-and-edits frenzy, and tales of horror, from Dracula (a duet with Groopie Kyoka Kyoka) to Ichabod Crane. The result may be the most satisfying pop album Momus has ever made -- but only if your definition of pop tends to the edgy, jumpy, fresh, and weird

¡Temazo de Northern Soul! The Kittens - "Looky Looky"

Like a lot of Chicago soul vocal groups, the Kittens are popular among Northern soul devotees. Another trait that they share with revered groups of that genre is that they became more popular later than when they were together and recording, during which they never had any nationally charting records. The Kittens emerged from Chicago's west side, forming around Farragut High school student Bernice Wills and Marshall High students Thelma Mack and her cousin Laurel Ross. Arranger/producer Johnny Pate signed the group to ABC-Paramount in 1964, as newly appointed Midwest A&R director for the label, a position created specifically for him. As the arranger for the Impressions, he and the label created a Chicago branch around 14th & Michigan to tap into the vibrant Chicago soul scene of the '60s. Their ABC Paramount singles include "I Got to Know Him" and "Lookie Lookie." Around 1968, they began recording for Chess, with "Aint No More Room," "Hey Operator," and "I've Got to Get Over You." Their other releases were "I Need Your Love Tonight" on the Don-El label and "Foolish Little Girl" on Grant.

Bubblegum Lemonade - "Doublepluesgood" LP (Matinee)

Más retro indie c-86 pop.

EL NOMBRE

"Bubblegum Lemonade comes from the Mama Cass Elliot debut 1969 solo album, 'Bubblegum, Lemonade And Something For Mama'. When I first saw it the potential for a band name jumped out at me. Also being obscure, Bubblegum Lemonade gives me an almost unique Goggle search result. I have learned this the hard way having previously been in a band called the Search Engines. What was I thinking ? A great name, but impossible to find online"

THE RICKENBACKER GUITAR

"It has a unique Clang sound that cuts through the audio mix. Many of my favourite guitarists played the Rickenbacker; Roger McGuinn, Marty Willson - Piper, Peter Buck, Susanna Hoffs, Paul Weller and Johnny Marr. Did you know that there is a Rickenbacker International Airport ? You couldn't land a Flying-V there. A Jefferson Airplane, maybe!

MATINEE

"Matinee is the new Creation, Sarah and Factory. Jimmy Tassos has the ears of Alan McGee and the eyes of Peter Saville. I'm going to have to see what that would literally look like in Photoshop. Matinee is about making the best possible pop records but in their own uncompromising way"

STRAWBERRY WHIPLASH

"Strawberry Whiplash have the cute vocals of Strawberry Switchblade combined with the fuzzy guitars of Meat Whiplash. They were both local bands. 'Since Yesterday' (STRAWBERRY Switchblade) and 'Don't Slip Up' (Meat WHIPLASH) are two of my favourite songs. Sandra sings and I (Laz) play the instruments in Strawberry Whiplash; Bubblegum Lemonade is primarily a solo project."

INFLUENCIAS

"Talulah Gosh, the Razorcuts, Primal Scream,My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and mary chain, the Byrds, the Primitives... When first getting into music, my favourites were the Velvets and the Byrds which of course led me towards the Mary Chain, Love, Rain Parade, the Kinks, Spacemen 3, and so on.

After Reprise rejected what was to be their debut album for the label, the Beach Boys re-entered the studio to begin work on what would become a largely different set of songs. The results signaled a creative rebirth for the band, a return to the beautiful harmonies and orchestral productions of their classic mid-'60s material. Though the songwriting didn't quite reach the high quality of "California Girls" or "God Only Knows," Sunflower showed the Beach Boys truly working as a band, and doing so better than they ever had in the past (or would in the future). Many of the songs were co-compositions, and the undeniable songwriting and performance talents of Dennis Wilson and Bruce Johnston were finally allowed to flourish: Dennis contributed "Slip On Through," "Forever," and "Got to Know the Woman," while Bruce wrote "Deirdre" and "Tears in the Morning." After a succession of spare, unadorned lead vocals on rock-oriented albums like Wild Honey and 20/20, Sunflower returned the Beach Boys to gorgeous vocal harmonies on the tracks "Add Some Music to Your Day," "Cool, Cool Water," and "This Whole World." And the arrangements, tight and inventive, showed Brian Wilson once again back near the top of his game (though the production is credited to the entire band). Sunflower is also a remarkably cohesive album, something not seen from the Beach Boys since Pet Sounds. As with that album, Sunflower earned critical raves in Britain but was virtually ignored in America. [Sunflower was made available in 2000 as half of the two-fer collection Sunflower/Surf's Up.]

2 Canciones gratis del nuevo lp de Would Be Goods

Would-Be-Goods - Sad Stories
Would-Be-Goods - The Ghost of Mr Minton
A Matinee Press Release: Highly anticipated fifth album ‘Eventyr’ from revered London quartet. “Sad stories are more beautiful” sings Jessica Griffin on the opening track, and those words could be the motto for the album as most of its songs are inspired by folk tales—timeless archetypal stories composed in northern Europe in the 19th century. ‘Eventyr’, meaning ‘adventures’ or ‘fairy tales’, was the title of Hans Christian Andersen's classic collection of stories, and in songs such as ‘Melusine’ and ‘Heart of Tin’, the Would-Be-Goods show that tales of imagination can evoke the joys and sorrows of life more vividly than dreary realism. Some of the songs stay closer to home: ‘In Bohemia’, ‘The Girl at No. 7’ and ‘The Ghost of Mr. Minton’ depict the arty low life of midcentury London to magnificent effect. Musically, though, ‘Eventyr’ is not a folk album: the songs distill ‘50s and ‘60s styles into something entirely new, traveling through baroque pop, bossanova and rockabilly. The album was developed slowly over two years and sees Andy Warren—formerly of Adam and the Ants and The Monochrome Set and bass player on the first two Would-Be-Goods albums—return to join Debbie Green on drums and backing vocals, Peter Momtchiloff on lead guitar, and Jessica on lead vocals and guitar. Another classic album from a band that never goes out of style! The band are launching the album at London's Bull & Gate on November 15th 2008

John Carney

The closing of Compendium is one of the sadder moments in the history of my bookstore passions. My English friends had long raved about Compendium, but back in 2000, word spread that it was shutting down. I travelled up to London a few weeks before it closed to get a feel for store. Sadly, it lived up to expectations, which made its demise that much more tragic." Jeremy Mercer en The Guardian).

Carney descubre en esta un ejemplar de sort of special edition of That Will Never Happen Again dedicado a las "British girls from the ‘60s" y "And I’ve become totally obsessed with it".

"The funny thing is I’ve been tracking down old Sandie Shaw and Dusty 45s for ages. But they’re just the tip of the iceberg it seems. This mag features loads of stuff I’d never even heard of. Now I really want to hear Louise Cordet and Billie Davis. The reassuring thing is I guess that there’s already things I’d stumbled across. Stuff like Madeline Bell. I absolutely love her version of What The World Needs Now. It's one of my favourite Bacharach covers. Which is saying something. And Samantha Jones’ Surrounded By A Ray Of Sunshine. I first heard that years ago on an old northern soul compilation called Sold On Soul, which my brother had. I played that to death. It also had The Drifter by Ray Pollard. Garnet Mimms’ Looking For You. Irma Thomas’ What Are You Trying To Do? The O’Jays and Jackie De Shannon. Little Anthony’s Better Use Your Head. Fantastic. A real education at the time.
The blue eyed soul thing is a bit of a recurring motif too, with a bit on Lorraine Silver of Lost Summer Love fame, and Kiki. Funnily enough they showed Doctor In Clover on the TV the other night, and Kiki sounded fantastic on the soundtrack. I love those films. Any excuse to do my Leslie Philips impersonation. All Kiki’s ‘60s recordings were brilliant. And I can fully understand why Motown asked her to make a record for them. But the soul fans over here turned their noses up. Ah the fools. "

SHIVERS INSIDE
Once upon a time I was accused of disappearing into my world of books and films where darkness came too soon. Total nonsense of course. There was music too. But the suggestion was that I was missing out. Total nonsense too. Products have so much to teach us. So many stories to tell…

FIFTY THOUSAND REASONS
They Made Magic These pen portraits build up into a gallery of special people. These people have made unique contributions to popular culture. Some of the stories will be fairly familiar, and some may seem slightly strange. There are some glaring omissions, and some odd inclusions. A thread of narrative runs through, and it’s all as subjective as hell.

Tony Christie - "Made in Sheffield"

Tony Christie releases his new studio album, ‘Made In Sheffield’ through Decca/Autonomy Recordings on 10 November 2008.
“Made In Sheffield” is the sound of Britain’s most enduring voice of timeless pop coming of age, and the sound of a Yorkshire city receiving the opus that its rich cultural history deserves, from one of its most beloved sons.
Produced by lifelong Tony Christie fans, Richard Hawley and Colin Elliot, “Made In Sheffield” is a beautiful dedication to the city that Tony Christie grew up around, featuring new recordings of songs by the city’s most revered contemporary artists and songs by unknown city songwriters deserving of acclaim.
It is a record dreamed up on the roads of late night Sheffield, and one that’s fruition stretches far beyond the simplest of dreams,
Tony Christie, “I was in the middle of an album project, when on the drive back home after a late session, I heard ‘Coles Corner’ by Richard Hawley on the radio. I said to my son, “that’s the sort of production I should be getting.””
Unbeknownst to him, Richard Hawley had already sent him over ‘Coles Corner’ four years ago, but due to prior commitments they were unable to record the track together. Weeks later, Tony went to see Richard in concert to request his production duties and guitar on a new version of ‘Coles Corner’. The pair bonded immediately, and Hawley immediately requested that he and co-producer Colin Elliot record and produce the whole album together at their Sheffield base, Yellow Arch Studios.
Tony’s original recording project developed into a new concept that the album should only feature songs written by Sheffield’s own songwriters, and new songs by Tony himself.
Tony Christie, “When we started listening to material, we were amazed at not only many songs there were, but the quality just blew us away. Some of the songs on the album are by completely unknown writers and might possibly have never seen the light of day.”
Some of Sheffield’s most acclaimed contemporary artists feature on the record, including album opener ‘The Only Ones Who Know’ by The Arctic Monkeys, ‘Born To Cry’ by Jarvis Cocker, ‘Louise’ by The Human League, and that long awaited recording of ‘Coles Corner’ by Richard Hawley. It is the sound of the lesser-known city songwriters that Tony holds close in the aftermath of the album sessions, including Martin Bragger, who contributes two songs (‘Danger Is A Woman In Love’/’Paradise Square’).
Ultimately, ‘Made In Sheffield’ takes the glittering career of the 65-year-old Tony Christie into a bold new direction. It contains all the grittiness and beauty of a city that often loses its prominence as a cultural birthplace, shunned for the proud history of Manchester and London, and moulds it into a romantic journey that could have been created at any point over the past four decades.
Tony Christie, “We are a proud community and the artists that have hailed from Sheffield are some of the most exciting and successful UK artists in pop history. I wanted to celebrate our culture.”
“Made In Sheffield” is a celebration of Sheffield and a celebration of their musical forefather. The soaring majesty of his voice and his reinvention of contemporary, acclaimed songs into revigoured and timeless classics marks an artist British institution in his absolute prime.
Tony Christie, “I am not, and never have been the excitable type but this album has me jumping. It is a very exciting time.”
